5pm.co.uk Gets A Makeover

5pm.co.uk, the country’s top restaurant reservation and review site has been given an exciting makeover and sees the launch of its brand new Health & Beauty section.

For almost ten years, 5pm.co.uk has enabled it’s users to dine out for less in restaurants across the country. Now the site will show consumers that less is most definitely more in the world of health and beauty by offering exclusive offers, discounts and deals on treatments at top spas and salons.

The health & beauty offers will initially be in Glasgow only but will be rolled out across the country in the coming months. Some of the top brands and salons that have already signed up are: Isis Crowne Plaza, Russell Cowie Hairdressing, Aveda @James Dun’s House, Aveda @ Mar Hall, 29 Royal Exchange Square and Beti Reilly.

The site will feature profile pages for salons and spas with descriptions of facilities and photographs meaning people can feel more relaxed about trying somewhere new because they’ve been able to have a peek inside. Users will also be able to review and rate their experiences on the site to gain loyalty points in the same way that they currently can with restaurant bookings.

Gillian O’Hara, Health & Beauty Manager at 5pm.co.uk said: “Everyone likes to look good and whether you’re going for that long needed trim or treating yourself or a loved one to a spa day, you no longer need to break the bank. We have partnered with some fantastic establishments to offer an incredible range of deals and we will be adding to them over the coming weeks.”

The innovative new section is yet another development in the already booming business of 5pm.co.uk headed up by Chairman Charles Shaw, who commented: “5pm.co.uk has always been a simple business model that works extremely well for both restaurateurs and consumers. Restaurants fill tables that would otherwise be empty and consumers can eat in great restaurants every day of the week for less money.

The aim of the event is to generate leads, create product awareness, build business relationships, network and make immediate sales.

Visitor profiles include buyers and production managers from the international confectionery industry, packaging designers, product developers, local retailers, wholesalers and international food retailing executives as well as the general public. Almost 60 jobs have been lost after D&G Food Group called in administrators and put its four bakery companies up for sale.

Mark Flynn, managing director of Pro Auction, says: “We have a good range of commercial baking equipment available, including various rotary and deck ovens, which are likely to attract interest, along with some excellent walk in chillers and freezers. Although we have a few specialist bakery online auctions lined up, opportunities to purchase first class equipment such as this, at a significantly reduced price, will be limited”.

The Derbyshire-based bakery Aldreds the Bakers Ltd, has been acquired by Frank Roberts and Sons Ltd , in a deal that will retain all 62 staff at Aldreds. 5pm.co.uk Announce Joint Promotion With Bunnahabhain Scotch Whisky

5pm.co.uk, Scotland’s leading online restaurant reservation site, has announced its new promotion in conjunction with Bunnahabhain Single Malt Scotch Whisky which gives 5pm diners the opportunity of sampling a free dram of Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Malt Whisky as they dine.

The promotion is running at 75 Glasgow and Edinburgh restaurants from 30th April 2010 to 30th May 2010.

Bunnahabhain, from the Isle of Islay, is quite distinct from the other single malts from the area, given the unique, wonderfully gentle and delicate taste profile for which it is known. It has been created using lightly peated malted barley in a time-honoured distillation process and takes advantage of the pure spring water that flows freely underground away from the peaty moorlands.

Charles Shaw, Chairman of 5pm.co.uk said: “This Bunnahabhain promotion gives our diners even better value from the already great 5pm deals. Diners booking through the 5pm.co.uk site get the opportunity of trying one of Scotland’s finest 12 Year Old Malt Whiskies. When booking online all the diner has to do is indicate the number of complimentary drams they’d like – one per diner is available – it’s that easy.”

The 5pm trial and tasting mechanism is revolutionary in the sector as it is effectively a promotion which is run by the consumer.

For Bunnahabhain the joint promotion with 5pm.co.uk offers it the opportunity to have its brand tried and tasted in the best ambience; when diners are in the right mood and have the whisky served to them in style, thus keeping the customer’s attention for a longer period than other traditional tasting promotions would allow.

5pm.co.uk Announces Great Results Following January Sale

5pm.co.uk, a website dedicated to restaurant deals and reservations, has made a fantastic start to the year after filling a record number of seats in the restaurant sector.

During 5pm’s January sale, which saw the company offer deals for two or three courses in some of the country’s top-rated restaurants for £12 a head, the company saw an increase of almost 30% on the bookings made in a similar deal offered in 2009. The promotion saw 35,000 bookings at more than 80 Glasgow and Edinburgh restaurants alone and the success of the deal has seen it extended until the end of February.

Restaurant offers on the website are available for eating establishments all over the United Kingdom.

Charles Shaw, the chairman of 5pm.co.uk, said: “The 5pm.co.uk offering is ideal in this economic climate, as it allows 5pm users the luxury of still being able to eat out at a fraction of the price. Consumers are ever more careful with their money and are constantly looking for deals that won’t break the bank and 5pm is delighted to be able to offer this.”

The 5pm website is free to join and members are given access to all the latest deals as well as a resource that allows them to book tables from a number of different restaurants. Users are allowed to rate the places they’ve eaten and leave restaurant reviews, giving other members a fuller picture of the place they’re going to eat.

To book, users simply need to search for a restaurant – by name, location or type of cuisine – and a few clicks later they could have a reservation in their name at any one of the participating restaurants.

The most popular restaurant bookings in Edinburgh during the sale were for Blonde, Café Andaluz, Calistoga Central and Channings while Glaswegians opted for Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery, Soho, Stravaigin 2, Rogano and the Bothy.

No Changes when Customers Select Christmas Wines

The ONLINE WINE RETAILER Serenata Wines sees that its UK clients are sticking to established choices this Christmas. The company does not glimpse any effects f r o m the financial difficulties that may still have its influence on the economy in the UK.

No Changes when Customers Select Christmas Wines

Serenata sees that Burgundy, a classical Christmas wine, is picking up gracefully in orders this time.

The London-based online wine specialist also revealed that additional established favorites, Port and Champagne, are proving admired.

Peter Ahl, Managing Director of Serenata Wines, said: “We routinely become aware of variations in wine popularity throughout different time of the year and have also noticed a number of influences f r o m current economical downturns, but this Christmas we see a solid growth and people buy the long-established wines.

“In Britain wine drinking is increasing steady. Every wine-growing state sends its stuff here which creates an embarrassment of choices. Buying wine online has too given people much extra choices and choice to acquire the most excellent. The selection of wines for Christmas is considered by many fairly confusing.

“Generally, Burgundy is considered the Christmas wine traditional. Many people who drink plenty of additional wines with a bit more ‘grip’ during the rest of the year do love their traditional Burgundy for their Xmas feast.

“Sparkling wine has its natural place in many social gatherings throughout Christmas time and the equally could be said for a glass of Port . Port which has a tendency to be replaced by other drinks still holds its position during Christmas.”

But Serenata’s out of the ordinary proposal for the ideal Christmas wine is a red wine that is not quite as conventional. Montepuliciano d’Abruzzo f r o m Valle Reale was the champion of Three Glasses in the 2009 Gambero Rosso Awards.

Spanish Food at Christmas Time: A Festive Treat

Perhaps one of the most flavoursome cuisines in the world, Spanish Food has plenty to offer in the way of enjoyment, and is for that reason a great addition to any Christmas stocking. With superb wines, from Riojas to Moscatel dessert wine, and excellent olives, Spanish food is a notable indulgence that can really put the enjoyment back into Christmas winters.

deliciosoimage.jpg (300×300)

The range of cheeses and meats in Spanish food is also impressive: for meat lovers, there’s no better gift than a well preserved chorizo sausage, or some finely prepared Serrano ham, and the Manchego, Idiazabal and Murcia al Vino cheeses are some of the best in the world, and will certainly get the love and appreciation they deserve from the cheese addicts among your presents list.

When stuck for something to buy those at Christmas who insist that it’s a time for enjoyment and fun, then, remember that specialist and genuinely quality food and drink are excellent luxuries that most people will appreciate, and that Spanish food is some of the best cuisine out there.

The Mediterranean is so rich in cuisine, in fact, that some of its most famous exports – its meats and cheeses – are easily matched by its vegetarian dishes, such as asparagus, piquillo peppers and artichokes.

For those with a sweet tooth, too, there are plenty of nuts, sweets and honeys and jams that can satisfy even the most ardent sugar fiend.

FoodTV Promotes Prudent Portions

With obesity rates rising, it is more important than ever that people eat healthily and take enough exercise. That is why FoodTV provide hundreds of simple and nutritious recipes, as well as demonstration videos to view online. However, when you begin to experiment and create your own dishes you shouldn’t forget the advice gained from FoodTV.

foodtvimage.jpg (400×300)

Every meal should include a variety of vegetables, carbohydrates and protein. You should also follow these tips for simple portion control:

Pasta
When cooking dried spaghetti, you should prepare a small handful for each person. Obviously this won’t work with some of the numerous varieties of pasta – a handful of penne pasta is not the same as a handful of tagliatelle.

Instead, a 230 gram serving of pasta is roughly the same size as a tennis ball. To make your pasta dishes even healthier, choose the wholegrain option.

Meat and fish
Both meat and fish are great sources of protein. However, nutritionists recommend you limit your intake of red meat, such as beef or lamb.

An average serving of meat should be about the same size as a deck of cards or a chequebook. A serving of fish – which is high in Omega 3 – should be about the same.

Vegetables
Whenever possible you should steam vegetables, as this means they will retain more of their nutrients. A 115 gram serving of cooked vegetables should be around the same size as an orange.

Dried fruit
While dried fruit will last much longer than fresh, it has around five times the calories by weight. To make sure you don’t overindulge, you should remember that a single serving of dried fruits should be about the same size as an egg or a golf ball.

Salad dressing
There is no need to add spoonfuls of dressing to add life to a salad. Instead, a drizzle of about five grams (roughly the size of your thumbnail) should be sufficient.

FoodTV provides hundreds of hours of online food-related videos, as well as easy recipes, budget cooking and drinks for all ages. Users can share recipes through the FoodTV community.

In “Cook Your Way to Wellness” both newcomers and seasoned cooks unfamiliar with fermenting will understand how easy it is to prepare these marvelous foods. Both the Nourishing Traditions, The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats, and “Cook Your Way to Wellness” are available at Maria Atwood’s website:http://www.traditionalcook.com Additionally, Maria has added a superior stoneware baking line of cookware, cutlery, fermented cod liver oil, high vitamin butter, and diatomaceous earth, which she considers an intricate part of her personal diet. Beer Universe Announces Enhanced Beer Recommendations

Beer Universe, Inc. (Beer Universe or the “Company”), a social media / e-commerce website that revolutionizes the beer marketplace and community for beer enthusiasts of all ages, has announced the enhancement of its Beer Recommendation system. The Company believes that its new algorithm will allow users to truly get better recommendations of beers that they will want to try.

“Utilizing the principles of collaborative filtering, Beer Universe is able to accurately predict the variety of beers a user may enjoy,” said Angel Rivera, lead developer on the project. He continued “We firmly believe that our recommendation system is the best out there and will continue to make Beer Universe the best beer social network on the Internet.”

With the vast amount of beers available, it is often overwhelming for users to select new beers that they have not previously consumed. There are many different styles of beer that are available today, including:

•  Pilsners

•  Lagers

•  Bocks

•  Ales

•  Meads

Each of these categories can be broken down even further (IPA’s, Belgium Ales, Lights, Darks, etc). With over 3,000 beers in Beer Universe’s database – the Company alleviates the aimless search for good beer. By utilizing the ratings system on Beer Universe, users will be able to enhance their own recommendations – the more beers a user rates, the smarter the system gets and the better the recommendations become. Users at Beer Universe can either rate / review beers in order to have it incorporated into their preferences.

The Company encourages new users to utilize the system, as reviewing more beers leads to points, which are the incentive based system on Beer Universe. The more points members accrue the more free stuff that they possibly could earn, f r o m books based on beers to flat screen televisions.

Eden Springs Launches Online Hydration Calculator

Eden Springs, the UK’s leading water cooler supplier, have just released a new hydration calculator that enables people to work out how much water they should be drinking. This online tool calculates your optimum daily water intake by taking into account a person’s gender, age, weight and exercise routine. The hydration calculator is available in the services section of the Eden Springs website.

It is commonly accepted that we all require a certain amount of water to maintain optimum health, energy and concentration. It is also reported that most people fall short of this daily requirement. What is less understood is exactly how much water we need.

Everyone is familiar with the ‘8 glasses a day’ or “7 glasses per day” arguments, but these rumours often understate our true requirements and don’t take into account the differences in a person’s age, weight and lifestyle. On the flip side, drinking too much water is not ideal either so it’s important for an individual to learn about their own requirements with some level of accuracy.

Damien Higgins, Marketing Manager at Eden Springs says “Eden Springs have released this calculator to give existing customers and website visitors a way of working out how many glasses of water they might need and it’s a reminder to us all that we should be refilling our glasses as we go about our day.”

“We’ve also just released a new range of low cost bottled water cooler rental plans, and this calculator helps people to work out how many bottles of water they might need each month for their home or office. Of course, we can also deliver additional bottles to their doorstep at short notice if they find they’re running short.”

The hydration calculator is a continuation of Eden Springs ‘Well-Being at Work’ philosophy, which encourages the consumption of water in the workplace to improve health, energy, focus and concentration.

Eden Springs is a recognised European brand and the leading supplier of bottled and plumbed-in water coolers in the UK. Based in Glasgow, they supply and service 130,000 water coolers held by more than 80,000 customers across the country. Market Overview
The Beer industry landscape has undergone significant change in the past several years. Beer Universe’s market is being driven by growth in the craft brewing segment, which is expanding between 13% – 15% per year, and grew more than 20% in 2007. Similar to other industries, breweries are allocating increasing amounts of their marketing budgets to online or emerging media, which from a macro perspective is growing at approximately 20% annually, amounting to $29 billion in 2008, and is expected to grow to $40 billion in 2010.

The Big Question: How Do Points Work?
Beer Universe’s points system creates an incentive for users to frequently use our platform. The Company has put together a system that allows users to benefit greatly from their continued use of the site. Users earn points through:

  • Adding a beer / bar / brewery
  • Writing reviews over 25 words
  • Writing quality reviews
  • Creating a group
  • Joining a group
  • Joining a quality group
What does this really mean? Beer Universe gives users points if they add a beer, bar or brewery to the system. (Beer Universe has not currently included ways for users to edit any of these in the current database, but this will be added in the near future.) In addition, users are incentivized to write reviews on beers, bars or breweries greater than 25 words. For each review a users adds to the Company’s system, they will receive 50 points. Reviews that are ranked by others as being Helpful will earn the author an additional 50 points.Beer Universe has also built incentives around Groups. The system buckets users in groups and treats each individual group as a user. Once a group reaches a minimum threshold of reviews, they will ALL receive points that will be distributed to all the members. In addition, if the group writes quality reviews – they will receive bonus points for these same reviews. Leaders of all these groups will earn a bonus for starting highly successful groups.

All point allocations to users are subject to change from time to time.

We really hope you enjoy using Beer Universe.
Your Choice. Your Beer. Drink Up.
