Students’ One Big Idea Hits Supermarket Shelves

A product designed by budding entrepreneurs from a Hertfordshire high school has hits supermarket shelves across the UK.

The pack of ethical plasters, designed by three female students from Bushey Meads School, so impressed bosses at The Co-operative Group – and original Dragon, Doug Richard – that it’s going on sale in almost 1,700 Co-operative food and pharmacy outlets.

One Careplast plasters are the result of a nationwide competition to design the next One product for Global Ethics, whose products also include One Water and One Eggs, to fund community projects in Africa.

A Level students Emmie Rayat (16), Taylar Leak (17) and Deryn Hertz (17) beat hundreds of entries to design a product that could be sold in the UK to help those most in need in Malawi. They came up with a children’s plaster pack of funky animal-print plasters, sales of which will fund medical kits and bicycle ambulances in Malawi, where rural communities might be up to 15km away from the nearest health centre and medical supplies are often unavailable.

Bicycle ambulances enable healthcare volunteers to travel huge distances on otherwise inaccessible roads to reach patients in remote villages. They take an average of 25 patients a month to hospital – including pregnant women. The medical kits ensure that first aid treatment is available promptly to communities of around 1,000 people.

The talented trio will see the projects for themselves on a trip to Malawi later this year, courtesy of The Co-operative.

Emmie Rayat said: “We’re delighted that our product is going on sale in so many Co-operative outlets across the country. We were shocked to discover that the life expectancy of someone living in Malawi is 43 years, which is younger than some of our parents and incredibly young compared to people in the UK. We’re looking forward to the trip to Malawi and to seeing the communities that have benefited.”

Peter Marks, Group Chief Executive of The Co-operative Group, which has annual sales of £14 billion, helped judge the competition. He said: “The students certainly did their homework and showed real enterprise. They pitched their idea perfectly – from the animal designs on the plasters to the powerful messages on the packaging, it all linked back strongly to funding medication, staff and other health care in Malawi.

“I’m sure the One plasters will prove popular with our customers, as they bring together two key elements of The Co-operative Ethical Plan – inspiring young people and tackling global poverty.”

Kellogg’s Gives Workers A Royal Pardon Over Wedding Public Holiday

Kellogg’s has announced that employees at the Manchester-based food giant who don’t want to watch the Wills and Kate nuptials told they can take the extra holiday whenever they like.

Kellogg’s has taken the unusual step to give its workers an extra day’s holiday to celebrate the royal wedding but allowing them to take it on a day of their choice.

The royal wedding on April 29 was declared a public holiday by David Cameron but the cereal maker has decided to allow employees at its UK head office flexibility over when they take the break.

Kellogg’s said it hoped the move would help workers achieve a better work life balance.

Tanya Thornber, European HR director at Kellogg’s explained: “We wanted to offer our employees real flexibility over the extra public holiday to celebrate the royal wedding. For some workers it may not be convenient to take the day off on April 29 or they may not want to watch the nuptials between William and Kate.

“As a global company we have a diverse and multinational workforce at the UK head office so we respect the fact that not everyone wants to celebrate the royal wedding. This sort of flexibility really boosts morale as it gives employees the choice to either take the day off and enjoy the wedding or come to work as usual and take it another day during the year when it may be more appropriate for them to spend the extra time with family or friends.”

Kellogg’s offers its workers a range of flexible working benefits including its summer hours initiative or Kellogg’s Fridays where staff can take Friday afternoons off from May to September*.

Culinary Tour: Eating National Dishes in 6 Countries in 24 Hours

Less than a day after attending the first European Culinary Tourism Conference in Vienna, Austria Steve Taylor the C.E.O. His focus will be on eating a national dish, or local specialty in each of the six countries he travels through on the train, all within a time frame of less than 24 hours. Other stops include Bratislava, Slovakia; Vienna, Austria; Szombothely, Hungary; and Zagreb, Croatia.

Steve doesn’t recommend rushing through countries while on a culinary tour, and all of the countries he is visiting are worth spending time in, and discovering their regional foods and the people that produce them. He could have just stayed on the train and not even breathed the air in some of the countries, but decided instead to “taste” every country that he travels through. He also wants to create more of an awareness for an emerging trend in travel called culinary tourism. His website promotes culinary tourism, and encourages those who travel to seek out local specialties, and eat the national dish of the countries they visit. As Steve says “It’s a great way to preserve their heritage and learn more about the people and their traditions, plus you get to eat some great food with an amazing history”. The Co-operative launched three own-brand Christmas sandwiches on 10 November which enable consumers to give charity donations simply when buying their lunch. When purchased, 10p from each sale will go towards funding an online support service for young carers.

YCNet – part of The Princess Royal Trust for Carers – is the only dedicated website and online support service for children and young people under the age of 18, who help to look after someone in their family with an illness, disability, drug/alcohol addiction or mental health problem. Some of the young carers are only five years old.

Earlier this year The Co-operative Group, launched its multi-million pound Inspiring Young People campaign. This is part of its ongoing support and commitment to helping young people in communities across the UK.

Cairo Hosts Unique Catalogue Exhibition For Food And Drink Industry At The End Of November 2010

Attendees to the event staying in a Cairo hotel will be making their way to the Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Centre where the summit and stands run from 29th November to 1st December 2010.

Foodie Festivities at the Forman & Field Open Day

Saturday 2 October saw another successful and very well-attended open day held by Forman & Field. Their east London premises, directly opposite the Olympic Park, were opened to the public, who could attend for free. The fine food mail order company organise an open day every year, showcasing their work. Those who came were able to explore the company’s Fish Island premises and find out about many of the small artisan food producers who supply Forman & Field with their many high-quality products.

There were many different things to see and do on the day. Forman & Field’s trademark product, their London Cure smoked salmon, played a big part, with attendees able to see the smoking process from start to finish on a tour of Fish Island. The company’s very own world record holder gave demonstrations throughout the day of his skill in carving salmon, which won him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The Food Theatre gave people the opportunity to see demonstrations from many independent producers, as well as to hear talks about their work. Then, there was the chance to try and buy at the Producers’ Market. There was a great choice of produce on offer from the Forman & Field family of food producers, with many people buying lots of food to take home as well as taking advantage of the tastings on offer.

The British Food Fortnight, which the Forman & Field open day is part of, takes place annually (from 18 September to 3 October this year). It brings together food lovers from across the country, who take part in thousands of different events.
