Is Belgian Chocolate the ‘King of Chocolate’?

For a small landlocked country nestled within the folds of Europe, Belgium has a big claim to fame. Talk chocolate, and Belgian seems to be the adjective that springs to mind when it comes to describing the absolute top quality.

Is Belgian Chocolate the ‘King of Chocolate'?

From the chocolate bars available in shiny wrappers at supermarkets to the expensive candies and pralines that can be bought at exclusive downtown chocolate boutiques, the range of chocolate available on the market is as varied in taste as it is in the country of origin. But in Europe, the debate over where the best chocolate in the world is produced is a topic of heated debate and much discussion.

Belgians proudly claim to have the finest range of chocolates, considered by many chocolatiers to be the gourmet standard by which all other chocolates are measured. The French, on the other hand, hold up their centuries old tradition of making chocolate to support their claim to supremacy. Swiss chocolates, which are famous world over for their quality, often lose their way in the debate when the question comes to the basic recipe, for the Swiss love to make exotic and deliciously eccentric chocolates, a passion said to have been borrowed from the Belgians and French. Germany and Austria also both have a stake in the chocolate industry, but Belgium generally still comes out on top.

“I have always been a huge fan of Belgian chocolates. And while Godiva and Neuhas have some mouth-watering concoctions, my favourite chocolate holiday in Belgium was a two week trip through the country, tasting chocolates made by smaller chocolatiers and some very distinct and wonderfully flavoured chocolates. I believe the Belgians create the same magic with chocolate that the French do with their wines”, says Nicolas Vernaire, a chocolatier who runs an exclusive boutique in Oxfordshire.

Like Nicolas, many chocolatiers believe the Belgian chocolate is made unique by the quality of ingredients used and a fanatical adherence to Old World chocolate making methods. “Mass production of chocolates is sacrilege for a Belgian. And much like wineries, you can walk into chocolate shops in Belgium and take part in taster sessions and classes on chocolate making”. Like everything good, the best chocolate also happens to be among the most expensive, and that is precisely the reason why, when you look up a dessert menu and see a chocolate cake that seems a little bit more expensive than you’d expected, remember to ask the waiter if the chocolate used is from Belgium. The chances are that it could have some mouth watering praline or truffles in it, making the extra pounds that you have to shell out worth every bite you take.

5pm.co.uk Announces Great Results Following January Sale

5pm.co.uk, a website dedicated to restaurant deals and reservations, has made a fantastic start to the year after filling a record number of seats in the restaurant sector.

During 5pm’s January sale, which saw the company offer deals for two or three courses in some of the country’s top-rated restaurants for £12 a head, the company saw an increase of almost 30% on the bookings made in a similar deal offered in 2009. The promotion saw 35,000 bookings at more than 80 Glasgow and Edinburgh restaurants alone and the success of the deal has seen it extended until the end of February.

Restaurant offers on the website are available for eating establishments all over the United Kingdom.

Charles Shaw, the chairman of 5pm.co.uk, said: “The 5pm.co.uk offering is ideal in this economic climate, as it allows 5pm users the luxury of still being able to eat out at a fraction of the price. Consumers are ever more careful with their money and are constantly looking for deals that won’t break the bank and 5pm is delighted to be able to offer this.”

The 5pm website is free to join and members are given access to all the latest deals as well as a resource that allows them to book tables from a number of different restaurants. Users are allowed to rate the places they’ve eaten and leave restaurant reviews, giving other members a fuller picture of the place they’re going to eat.

To book, users simply need to search for a restaurant – by name, location or type of cuisine – and a few clicks later they could have a reservation in their name at any one of the participating restaurants.

The most popular restaurant bookings in Edinburgh during the sale were for Blonde, Café Andaluz, Calistoga Central and Channings while Glaswegians opted for Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery, Soho, Stravaigin 2, Rogano and the Bothy.

Hollywood Stars Enjoy Swag Bag Heaven at 2010 Golden Globe Awards

Award trophies are nice, but what do big name movie stars like Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Penélope Cruz and Hollywood party-goers really crave besides a little extra attention?

How about those swanky loot bags loaded up with ultra-premium goodies handed out at different venues held before the 67th Golden Globe ceremonies happening this Sunday in Beverly Hills, California.

This year a number of Canadians representing a variety of premium lifestyle products will be on hand to showcase their wares during ceremonies leading to the Awards night, including a reception sponsored by the Canadian Consulate.

One of the trophy products included in the swag bag extravaganza is riceworks®, the Gourmet Brown Rice Crisp from Vancouver-based Snack Alliance Inc. The riceworks® snack is one of the carefully chosen premium Canadian products tucked away in the posh swag bags that award winners, nominees and select party-goers receive when they drop by the Oh Canada gift lounge at the Beverly Hills Peninsula Hotel prior to the Sunday show.

“Everybody loves the swag bag hoopla, and it’s a fabulous way to showcase our gourmet products,” says Tricia Ryan, Director of Marketing for riceworks®, and leading promoter for the brand. “We’re joining other premium products like Heather Stewart’s famous Lilyfield Cakes and Jamie Macfarlane’s Northern Ice Vidal Icewine as prime examples of what Canada brings to the world’s table. We’re in good company.”

A Perfect “Oh Canada” Launch Party
A number of nominated Canadian actors and film directors including Christopher Plummer and Jason Reitman have been invited to attend the Canadian Consulate sponsored event where riceworks® will be touted and tasted.

For Ms. Ryan, the chance to meet and schmooze some big names affords her the opportunity to also promote “Show Us Your Goodness,” a riceworks®-sponsored social campaign that invites consumers to nominate and vote online for the charitable program they believe has gone the extra mile to “serve the greater good.” “Not only will we have a chance to show off our products, we’ll have a chance to spread the good word for our charity program,” says Ms. Ryan.

Contest details are available at www.showusyourgoodness.com.

No Changes when Customers Select Christmas Wines

The ONLINE WINE RETAILER Serenata Wines sees that its UK clients are sticking to established choices this Christmas. The company does not glimpse any effects f r o m the financial difficulties that may still have its influence on the economy in the UK.

No Changes when Customers Select Christmas Wines

Serenata sees that Burgundy, a classical Christmas wine, is picking up gracefully in orders this time.

The London-based online wine specialist also revealed that additional established favorites, Port and Champagne, are proving admired.

Peter Ahl, Managing Director of Serenata Wines, said: “We routinely become aware of variations in wine popularity throughout different time of the year and have also noticed a number of influences f r o m current economical downturns, but this Christmas we see a solid growth and people buy the long-established wines.

“In Britain wine drinking is increasing steady. Every wine-growing state sends its stuff here which creates an embarrassment of choices. Buying wine online has too given people much extra choices and choice to acquire the most excellent. The selection of wines for Christmas is considered by many fairly confusing.

“Generally, Burgundy is considered the Christmas wine traditional. Many people who drink plenty of additional wines with a bit more ‘grip’ during the rest of the year do love their traditional Burgundy for their Xmas feast.

“Sparkling wine has its natural place in many social gatherings throughout Christmas time and the equally could be said for a glass of Port . Port which has a tendency to be replaced by other drinks still holds its position during Christmas.”

But Serenata’s out of the ordinary proposal for the ideal Christmas wine is a red wine that is not quite as conventional. Montepuliciano d’Abruzzo f r o m Valle Reale was the champion of Three Glasses in the 2009 Gambero Rosso Awards.

Spanish Food at Christmas Time: A Festive Treat

Perhaps one of the most flavoursome cuisines in the world, Spanish Food has plenty to offer in the way of enjoyment, and is for that reason a great addition to any Christmas stocking. With superb wines, from Riojas to Moscatel dessert wine, and excellent olives, Spanish food is a notable indulgence that can really put the enjoyment back into Christmas winters.

deliciosoimage.jpg (300×300)

The range of cheeses and meats in Spanish food is also impressive: for meat lovers, there’s no better gift than a well preserved chorizo sausage, or some finely prepared Serrano ham, and the Manchego, Idiazabal and Murcia al Vino cheeses are some of the best in the world, and will certainly get the love and appreciation they deserve from the cheese addicts among your presents list.

When stuck for something to buy those at Christmas who insist that it’s a time for enjoyment and fun, then, remember that specialist and genuinely quality food and drink are excellent luxuries that most people will appreciate, and that Spanish food is some of the best cuisine out there.

The Mediterranean is so rich in cuisine, in fact, that some of its most famous exports – its meats and cheeses – are easily matched by its vegetarian dishes, such as asparagus, piquillo peppers and artichokes.

For those with a sweet tooth, too, there are plenty of nuts, sweets and honeys and jams that can satisfy even the most ardent sugar fiend.

UK Wine Drinker Hazel Rigazio Has 2,015 Naked Wines’ Customers To Thank For Winning A Winemaking Trip To Mclaren Vale, South Australia

UK wine drinker Hazel Rigazio has 2,015 Naked Wines‘ customers to thank for winning a winemaking trip to McLaren Vale, South Australia.

Naked Wines, along with bbcgoodfood.com and the Government of South Australia, ran a competition throughout September challenging customers to come up with a new name for a wine, with Hazel’s entry Botanically Blessed winning the lions share of the public vote.

“I asked all of my friends to vote for my entry, but I never imagined I’d get 2,015 votes let alone win the competition, I’m absolutely astounded! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves, live the life of a winemaker, and blend my very own wine” explained Hazel.

Hazel, from Mersyside, will spend a week working alongside Naked Wines’ producer Jock Harvey at his family-run winery Chalk Hill, and if all goes according to plan, customers will see her tipple Botanically Blessed for sale in the UK on the Naked site.

“We had over 5,000 entries in total, with some really strong contenders – and some pretty ropey and inappropriate ones too!” explained Rowan Gormley, Founder of Naked Wines. “ But putting it to the public vote made it easy to pick the winner. We use our most interactive customers to help us select our wines, and it made sense to do the same with the competition.”

With the second most popular entry (ade-get-laide) receiving 433 votes, Hazel’s entry was the outright favourite.

Other entries included Didgeribooze, Down Wonder, Aussie Drools and Not for the Sheilas, with one entrant including a label design of his naked girlfriend posing strategically inside a six-bottle box (Robert Young Photography).

Hazel’s trip will include a stay on Kangaroo Island, a tour of Adelaide and numerous cellar-door tastings. And to find out how Hazel gets on, you can follow her blog at http://www.nakedwines.com/auscomp.

FoodTV Promotes Prudent Portions

With obesity rates rising, it is more important than ever that people eat healthily and take enough exercise. That is why FoodTV provide hundreds of simple and nutritious recipes, as well as demonstration videos to view online. However, when you begin to experiment and create your own dishes you shouldn’t forget the advice gained from FoodTV.

foodtvimage.jpg (400×300)

Every meal should include a variety of vegetables, carbohydrates and protein. You should also follow these tips for simple portion control:

Pasta
When cooking dried spaghetti, you should prepare a small handful for each person. Obviously this won’t work with some of the numerous varieties of pasta – a handful of penne pasta is not the same as a handful of tagliatelle.

Instead, a 230 gram serving of pasta is roughly the same size as a tennis ball. To make your pasta dishes even healthier, choose the wholegrain option.

Meat and fish
Both meat and fish are great sources of protein. However, nutritionists recommend you limit your intake of red meat, such as beef or lamb.

An average serving of meat should be about the same size as a deck of cards or a chequebook. A serving of fish – which is high in Omega 3 – should be about the same.

Vegetables
Whenever possible you should steam vegetables, as this means they will retain more of their nutrients. A 115 gram serving of cooked vegetables should be around the same size as an orange.

Dried fruit
While dried fruit will last much longer than fresh, it has around five times the calories by weight. To make sure you don’t overindulge, you should remember that a single serving of dried fruits should be about the same size as an egg or a golf ball.

Salad dressing
There is no need to add spoonfuls of dressing to add life to a salad. Instead, a drizzle of about five grams (roughly the size of your thumbnail) should be sufficient.

FoodTV provides hundreds of hours of online food-related videos, as well as easy recipes, budget cooking and drinks for all ages. Users can share recipes through the FoodTV community.

Kellogg’s Report Finds Monroe Not Moss Is The Ideal Figure

According to a new report from the Kellogg company, a massive 60% of British women say they are actually ‘fruit-shaped’ apple and pears but over two thirds of the nation are desperate for the classic Marilyn Monroe-esque hourglass figure.

kelloggs

In a landmark study to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kellogg’s Special K*, it was found that the ultimate slimming goal for women is no longer being the ‘Perfect 10’ but to get a curvy hourglass shape.

Regardless of whether they were 25 or 55 the hourglass figure personified by the shapely Nigella Lawson resolutely remains the body shape the majority of women aspire to. In fact, just 7% yearned for the boyish and shapeless body made famous by the likes of Twiggy in the sixties and Kate Moss in the nineties and the noughties.

With over 35% of the nation’s women confessing they are apple-shaped – a shape characterized by an undefined waist – and just 13% possessing an enviable hourglass figure – it seems shape not size is what matters most to women these days.

The research by Special K revealed women are taking their inspiration from curvy celebrities in the media too. While the sensuous hourglass curves of Nigella topped Special K’s inspiration index, Dame Helen Mirren was voted the second biggest ‘body booster’ – becoming an inspiration to millions after being photographed in her bikini last year, and Dame Judi Dench came in third.

Key body shape boosters include seeing shapely women on TV rather than size zero models, curvy celebrities with hunky boyfriends (such as Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson), and older actresses such as Helen Mirren ‘baring all’ for nude scenes.

Laura Bryant from Special K said: “The report shows that women’s attitudes to slimming over the last 50 years have changed along with their figures. It seems British women have lost their waists but now they are demanding them back. They are more concerned about getting a curvy hourglass shape like their grandmothers instead of being the perfect size 10 which shows a marked shift in attitude from the 80’s and 90’s when success and failure when slimming was benchmarked against fitting into certain sized clothes.”

To help people achieve their ideal shape for the summer and beyond, Kellogg’s Special K has created ShapeMate, an online tool which allows users to create their own free personal plan and delivers expert advice tailored to meet individual needs. The Kellogg’s site also features a BMI calculator to help people understand if their body mass index, a measure of a person’s height versus their weight, is in the ideal range or not.

* Survey by Tickbox across 2,000 women across the UK.

About the Kellogg company:
Since William Keith Kellogg filed the papers that officially incorporated the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flakes Company on 19th Feb 1906, the Kellogg’s company has been driven by the philosophy that an improved balanced diet leads to improved health. The Kellogg company is now the most successful cereal manufacturer in the world.

World Panda Healthy Herbal Drink (Panda Sober Drink)

“World Panda Healthy Herbal Drink” (Panda Sober Drink), a very inspirational Sober-upproduct, is Dr. Chao’s own patented product that comes from a line of 130-year-old formulas developed and first used by Dr. Chao’s ancestors back in 1878. This 100% all-natural herbal beverage is manufactured in the state of Wisconsin, and has been certified by the National Food Laboratory of America to be sugar-free, calorie-free, caffeine-free, contains no preservatives and no artificial sweeteners of any kind.

Consuming alcohol may cause headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, unclear mind, uncomfortable stomach, thirstiness, and a bitter taste, and can also cause severe headache, stomach ache, loss of appetite, and a lethargic feeling from a previous night of alcohol consumption.

Drinking 1 to 3 cans of Panda Drink before consuming alcohol, or mixing it with alcohol, will allow individuals to drink three times more alcohol without getting drunk and dizzy.

When drunk, drinking 3 to 5 cans of Panda Drink will allow individuals to quickly recover from alcohol intoxication within three hours, relieving the symptoms of headache, dizziness, vomiting, thirstiness, and clearing the bitter taste, as well as avoiding a severe headache the next day. This drink enables the individual to restore his or her natural state of mind, so that they can function normally the next day.

The herbs in the Panda Drink contain special enzymes that help alcohol dehydrogenase break down alcohol quicker, then quickly convert the alcohol to harmless water and carbon dioxide and thus can be discharged rapidly through urine. At the same time, the herbs of Panda Drink help to balance the functions of the liver and the heart, improve the metabolism of cerebrum cells, and increase the cells’ absorption rate of oxygen. According to Dr.Chao’s expertise, people can avoid the harm from alcohol and won’t get drunk if alcohol can be converted into harmless water and carbon dioxide quickly. Therefore, drinking with Panda Drink will help people keep a clear head even when drinking great quantities of alcohol.

In order to expand our service, we are looking for business partner who has the financial capability and sales experience in the beverage industry to join the company’s management team.

For more information on the sober up drink, and to purchase it, please call U.S. PANDA FOODS & BEVERAGES INC. at 1-877-237-2426.

Old World Gourmet has been in the business of selling frozen wine chillers for 6 years. Dan and Deanna Sullivan attribute the success of their company to the grace of God, commitment to succeed, and always exceeding our customer’s expectations. “Success for us is truly measured by our customer’s complete satisfaction.” Deanna states.

Old World Gourmet actually made its debut on September 11, 2001… (Yes that date is correct). Dan reflected back to the day the business started, “We were in Philadelphia at the National Candy Show. Certainly we will never be able to forget that day.”

Old World Gourmet will be celebrating their 6th year in business on September 11, 2007. “Our parent company “Nuts for You” started in 1996 in Florida with two products, cinnamon and sugar glazed nuts and my grandmother’s “church punch” which later became our signature “Old World Cider”. Deanna reminisced By providing a high quality line of products and designing their own packaging and marketing strategies, It is no wonder that within the last five (5) years Old World Gourmet has reached a regular customer base just over 4000. They manufacture all of their products from the actual item to the custom bags that they go into. All are hand-crafted and hand assembled one bag at a time. Merchants who have developed a working relationship with Old World Gourmet are able to take advantage of their private labeling for resellers. If there is a frozen wine cooler on the market, it likely got its start at Old World Gourmet.

Old World Gourmet has been featured in The Home Business Magazine which highlights “self-made” business individuals. Some of their products such as our Vineyard Frost and their Margarita have been featured in magazines such as Rave Reviews and Country Business. Their products can be found in locations such at The Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Tampa Airport, Orlando Airport, Hallmarks, Theme parks, Boutiques, Hospital gift shops, and hundreds of retail shops.

Excitedly Deanna announces the new line of products that just hit the market. “Our Wine @ Five Collections(TM) of frozen wine chillers is a must! The hottest NEW Frozen Wine Drinks are here. Vineyard Frost, a refreshingly different way to cool down on a hot summer day! Just add our Vineyard Frost, your favorite wine, and mix, freeze and enjoy! No blender or ice needed.
